How can one see
what is light
what is night
when we swim
in eternal day?

Everything is
supposition
superimposition
till what we call
we call, because
it’s all we know
and knew at all

like the waters off of east Africa
the waters off Madagascar
might as well be the same
for all the difference

so we must look to a star
to find out where we are
or take up an instrument
to sound the depths
for some near shore

or

perhaps it is better to remain lost
