Bells Break Cadenced

Bells break cadenced upon the plain
to mark the elusive quarter hour
they penetrate red brick tower
rise above the horn of passing train
my life is but bells upon the wind
a measure of never-ending minutes
a sound that soars far beyond my limits
lost in the eternal refrain – “I have sinned”

bells chime loud through sunlit air
they call me out to light, to prayer.
