A Day Now Dead

 
Hear the midnight bell’s plaintive ring
twelve, twelve, twelve, twelve they say
listen to them in the shadowed darkness sing
TAKE HEED AND KNOW THE DAY IS DEAD!”
mourn the endless empty loss of the present now past
buried in the gray unvisited tomb of yesterday
ravaged by abusive hours breathed final words,
                                                                 “at last…”
