Star Trek XI

I have to tell you I’m something of a Star Trek nerd. Certainly not to the degree my friend Mike is but I’m right up there. When Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan came out Mike organized a trip to the theatre on opening night where we all went as characters. Mike had actual shirts with insignia. He also had replicas of a communicator and a phaser. We even decked out his car to look like the Enterprise (as much as you can make a brick red Volvo station wagon look like the starship Enterprise). I think we might have even played a round of the old Star Trek role-playing game before we went.

It has been said that there are Star Trek fans and there are Star Wars fans. I am definitely a Star Trek fan. I have a couple of starfleet technical manuals at home as well as a super-rare starfleet navigation manual. When we went to the movie I think I almost cried when Spock died and I am pretty sure I once even signed a brithday card to my friend Mike with the words of Spock to Kirk in the movie "I have been and always shall be – your friend…".

So yes – I shamelessly admit that I am a Star Trek nerd. In the spirit of all things nerdly I have been rivited to the Star Trek website – www.startrek.com waiting for the latest trailer to be released for the next movie which comes out May 8, 2009. The Trek movies have suffered over the past few years. The original four were pretty good and were developing a fairly reliable pattern of even numbers good, odd numbers bad. Then somewhere around Star Trek 5 onward they all becoming progressively bad movies. I have a feeling this next one is going to break the chain and start something fresh. As it has been said all things old are new again. This Trek movie takes us back to the original series, the original characters and recasts the actors (very well from what I have seen) to present us with an origins film. A story of how the crew came together and a picture of the crucible that formed the most memorable ensemble on television. I have high hopes for the movie and have already downloaded the trailer to my iPod.

You be the judge. Watch the trailer and let me know what you think (the bigger and louder the better):
